Whether you call it a “Stride of Pride” like Liz Lemon (Tina Fey) or wish you could simply disappear, we all know what it’s like to have a morning after that we’d rather forget. Lucky for us, we don’t have to carry around those humiliating memories alone. Seeing some of our favorite small screen characters in the same situation makes us relish being on the other side of the proverbial walk of shame. Here’s a look at seven of the most memorable (and miserable) walks of shame ever.
1. Penny on “The Big Bang Theory”
Even though we found out later that nothing happened, it was so much fun to watch Penny (Kaley Cuoco-Sweeting) slink out of Leonard’s (Johnny Galecki) bedroom after spending a drunken night with Raj (Kunal Nayyar). Caught in the hall with nowhere to hide, Penny let out a few well-timed curses and, with shoes in hand and hair a disheveled mess, insisted “it’s not what it looks like.”
2. Helene on “Shameless”
She may be a professor, but tenure can’t protect this naughty teacher from an ill-timed walk of shame. Helene (Sasha Alexander) dons a dark hoodie and movie star glasses to sneak out of Lip’s (Jeremy Allen White) dorm room following a very personal one-on-one session with the Gallaghers’ hottest (and brightest) rebel.
3. Laurie on “Cougar Town”
The cul de sac’s resident buxom blonde has nothing to be ashamed of and she lets all of us know it. After a dry spell, Laurie (Busy Philipps) finally got back on the one-night-stand horse and, rather than hanging her head, stepped out proudly in yesterday’s clothes to celebrate. Laurie owns her sexuality and shows us all that sometimes the morning after is really a “walk of awesome.”
4. Nick on “The Bachelorette”
Finally — a dude doing the walk of shame! When bachelorette Kaitlyn Bristowe invited Nick Viall back to her room after their one-on-one date, they made “Bachelorette” history. Not only did the two dive into things usually reserved for the fantasy suite, but they didn’t even try to hide it. After leaving viewers with a closed door and seriously sexy pillow talk, we didn’t see Nick again until he peeked out his head to hightail it back to the boys’ estate the next morning.
5. Jess and Cece on “New Girl”
A walk of shame doesn’t always have to follow a one night stand. Sometimes you take to the sidewalk in the early morning hours wearing last night’s party clothes without any hanky-panky to blame. Such is the case after Jess (Zooey Deschanel) and Cece (Hannah Simone) have a wild night where, even though they do go home with some fellas, they manage to keep their virtue in tact (at least for one night). This is a great picture of true friendship — after all, a walk of shame is so much easier with your bestie beside you.
6. Carrie on “Sex and the City”
There are plenty of walks of shame with Carrie’s (Sarah Jessica Parker) name on them, but the very best (or worst) is when she’s tangled up in her sordid affair with Big (Chris Noth) and bumps into Miranda. She does her best to avoid an awkward confession by telling Miranda she’s on her way to a super-early dentist appointment. When Miranda calls bullsh**t based on Carrie’s attire, the best Carrie can do is mumble a paltry excuse about laundry day.
7. Cersei on “Game of Thrones”
In true “Game of Thrones” fashion, this walk of shame is hard core. There’s no sheepish grin or hungover stumbling — this is brutal punishment of the first order. Cersei (Lena Headey) is stripped of her clothes, her hair is hacked off, and she’s forced to walk through a rough and rowdy crowd followed by a woman ringing a bell and shouting, “Shame!” To make it about a million times worse, she’s pelleted with rotten fruit and the contents of chamber pots. Thank goodness our modern-day walks of shame are totally self-inflicted and not done to punish us for our sins.
